How to Remove Leaf Springs

12*100*1200 Trailer Leaf Spring Kit

Whether it’s truck leaf springs or trailer leaf springs, the disassembly method is largely similar.

prop up

Ensure the ground beneath your feet is firm and level.

When jacking up the bike, focus on the frame rather than the rear axle. Place the frame on the jack stand with the axles hanging freely, then insert the jack stands beneath the designated load-bearing points on the frame.

relax

Before removing leaf springs, first detach the corresponding wheel, then use another jack to press against the axle and lift it slightly—to eliminate the compressive force at the spring’s base. Subsequently, lower the jack gradually, allowing the axle to sink accordingly, enabling the spring to return to its natural bent state.

How to determine if complete relaxation has been achieved? The spring and base plate should no longer interlock; shaking them manually should reveal no issues.

U-Bolts

The leaf spring U-bolts secure the axle against the spring. When removing them, avoid unscrewing one side all at once; instead, loosen them evenly.

  • bolts are inherently consumables that require replacement. If they cannot be tightened after applying lubricant, the nut must be removed directly using an angle grinder. Once the nut is cut off, tap the U-bolt loose; after removing the pressure plate, the axle and spring will be separated.

End connection points

Most leaf springs feature a fixed front end and a movable rear end connected via a shackle.

The recommended sequence is to first remove the shackle, then the front hanger.

Similarly, if this section is severely rusted, it may also need to be cut.

When both ends are released, the spring completely disengages from the frame.

Pay attention to the weight!

Leaf springs may appear compact, but they are actually quite heavy—especially heavy-duty leaf springs with multiple plates. If you’ve never experienced their weight firsthand, exercise caution: never pull them out with one hand; ask for assistance or use your legs to support your hands while dragging them steadily and gently flat. A weight of several dozen kilograms striking your feet is no joke.

check up

Don’t just throw it away after removing it; take a little over two minutes to examine it:

Is there any deformation of the eye socket?

Are there any cracks?

Is the radius normal?

Is the leaf spring center pin broken?

Is the blade assembly structure neat?

What is the condition of each leaf spring part?

U-bolts should not be reused in most cases; remember to replace them.

Only after identifying the issue did we determine whether replacing just the bushing would suffice or if a complete set of replacement leaf springs was required.

Removing the spring requires both physical effort and patience—cut it when necessary.

If you don’t have sufficient support equipment or are not familiar with the suspension structure, it’s best to leave it to professionals.

The suspension system is not merely an exterior component; it directly impacts the vehicle’s stability and safety. If any issues are detected during disassembly, proceed slowly and patiently—it’s better than regretting it later.
