Coil Spring Material

High carbon:

High carbon wire types include music wire and hard drawn wire. Music wire is often used in tools, while hard drawn wire is often used in commercial products. High carbon wire does not usually do well in high-temperature and corrosive environments, however.

Steel alloys:

Steel alloys are another common choice for coil springs and include materials like chrome silicon, which is often used in large coil springs. While more accepting of high temperatures, these materials are still prone to corrosion.

Coil Spring End Type

Closed and Squared Ends
The last coil is closed touching the previous coil closed and squared ends is the most economical of all end types and works well for standing up normal size springs. Closed and squared ends do NOT work well if you have a spring with a small outer diameter you should choose closed and ground ends so it will stand up vertically straight.

Closed and Ground Ends
The last coil is closed and ground flat touching with the previous coil. Closed and ground ends help the spring stand up vertically straight. This type of end lets your spring stand up straight and gives an even surface of contact to the spring base.

Double Closed Ends
The last two coils on each end are closed to help stabilize the top and bottom of the spring. Double closed ends aids your springs footing especially when you have a large outer diameter coupled with a fine or smaller diameter wire when compressing or traveling to stacked height where all the coils are touching. Double closed ends help your spring ends from sliding over or slipping under the previous coil, it keeps the coils stacked up on top of each other correctly.

Open Ends
The ends of the spring are open and have space or pitch in-between them. This is a good option if you need more force out of your spring but don't have the room for it. An open ended spring makes all of your coils active thus getting the all the force out it. This kind of spring end requires that you place it in hole or on a shaft to make it work.

Coil Spring Buckling

Where the free length of a coil spring exceeds four times the mean diameter, lateral deflection or buckling becomes notice able during compression.
Piloting and guiding on the O.D. or I.D. helps correct this problem, although friction against a supporting member may be objectionable due to possible scoring and affected load reading.
For springs with squared and ground ends, one end on a plate and the other on a ball, objectionable buckling will occur when the coordinates are to the right of line 1.
Objectionable buckling will occur to the right of line 2 when springs with squared and ground ends are compressed between parallel plates, as on a spring testing machine.
When possible the spring should be designed so the end of the coils (tip ends) are 180° apart. This is accomplished by having the number of coils active and inactive always end on the half coil (i.e., 4.5 active and 6.5 total).
This allows for even distribution of the spring material preventing the spring from buckling sooner than shown on the graph above. This condition also helps prevent the spring from going out of square under load.

Coil Spring Production Process

Hot Wound Springs

In hot wound coiling, the material is heated to austenitic temperatures of over 1550F, formed on the coiler, and then quenched in oil to form martensite. Next, the springs are tempered to change the microstructure to a tempered martensite which provides strength to achieve the desired spring performance and ductility to withstand the operation. Hot wound coiling is usually for larger bars sizes over 0.500" (12 mm).
Every bar and every spring in a lot goes through the entire length of the furnaces. This means that each bar, and therefore each spring, gets a consistent heat treatment and is not dependent on its position in the furnace. This is a distinct advantage over batch processes where each spring receives a different heat treatment depending on where and when the material is placed in the furnace.

Cold Wound Springs

Cold coiled springs are made from fully heat-treated material and then stress relieved to remove the stresses induced during the coiling process. Springs can coil up to 0.625" (15.8 mm) in Chrome Silicon and Oil Tempered Wire.

FAQ

Q: How is the diameter of the wire for a coil spring determined?

A: It depends on the load requirements, space constraints, and the desired spring characteristics.

Q: What factors affect the stiffness of a coil spring?

A: Wire diameter, number of coils, material, and the diameter of the spring itself.

Q: How is the fatigue life of a coil spring evaluated?

A: Through fatigue testing and analysis of material properties and loading conditions.

Q: What does the coil spring do?

A: Coil springs are used to absorb shock, maintain force, support structures and facilitate controlled movement in various mechanical applications. They can be used in a wide range of systems, from automotive components to industrial machinery.

Q: Can you drive with a broken coil spring?

A: Driving with a broken coil spring can be risky and is generally not recommended. Here are some reasons why: Handling and Stability: A broken coil spring can significantly affect your vehicle's handling, making it difficult to steer and increasing the risk of losing control.

Q: How do you know if your coil spring is gone?

A: Signs that a coil spring is broken include:
Uneven tyre wear.
The ride height may be uneven and sag.
The suspension system may make unusual sounds like clunks or squeaks.
Decreased handling capabilities which can make driving feel bumpy and unstable ride.
