How to Fix Squeaky Leaf Springs

Under normal operating conditions, slight displacement occurs between the leaf springs in the leaf spring suspension, but this sliding movement does not produce noticeable noise.

The common causes of noise generally include:

  1. Sand and silt enter the gaps between the blades.

Dust and mud enter the system, coming into direct contact with the metal surface; continuous friction not only produces noise but also accelerates wear.

  1. Dry friction between leaves

In the absence of an appropriate leaf spring lubricant, direct metal contact occurs, resulting in a harsh friction sound.

  1. Cover wear

The leaf spring bushings become hardened or cracked, the cushioning between the spring eye and the bolt is lost, and metallic collision sounds are distinctly audible.

  1. Fasteners are loose

This includes issues with the leaf spring shackle and U-bolt loosening; insufficient clamping force can cause abnormal displacement of the blades, leading to unusual noises.

Option 1: Cleaning and Lubrication

If the issue is identified promptly, begin with routine cleaning: rinse the gaps between blades using a high-pressure water gun to remove sediment.

Raise the frame to allow the axles to hang naturally, then apply graphite-based or dry Teflon leaf spring lubricant evenly between the blades.

WD-40 is a commonly used additive that provides cleaning, rust removal, and lubrication functions simultaneously; however, it is not suitable as a long-term lubricant—dry lubricants that do not attract dust are more appropriate.

The abnormal noise usually caused by friction can be resolved at this stage.

Option 2: Replace the Parts

If the noise persists after cleaning and lubrication, the issue may stem from wear in the leaf spring components.

Prioritize inspection of leaf spring bushing replacements:

Are the anti-friction linings missing?

Has the leaf spring clamp deformed?

Sliding sleeve wear is a very common cause of issues; in severe cases, it can even compromise driving safety. Replacing the appropriate rubber or composite sliding sleeve typically resolves the problem directly.

Option 3: Check Structure and Torque

If there are not only abnormal noises but also vibrations or slight unnatural movement of the vehicle body, a more thorough inspection is required.

Check the leaf spring shackle; excessive wear or improper installation angle can reduce the spring’s efficiency.

Check the U-bolts; loose ones may cause the spring to shift within the central hole.

Please note that this noise indicates poor condition of the leaf springs; if necessary, it is advisable to have a professional retighten them using the specified torque.

When should it be replaced?

If issues such as blade misalignment, noticeable body sagging, or visible cracks occur, the aforementioned solutions alone will not suffice.

Be particularly vigilant about broken leaf springs. For severely aged truck or trailer leaf springs, conventional methods can only reduce noise levels without restoring their strength; timely replacement is strongly recommended.

How to prevent the recurrence of abnormal noises?

For leaf springs, routine maintenance is more cost-effective than waiting until issues arise before fixing them.

Perform regular visual inspections to monitor curvature and detect any cracks or misalignments.

Clean promptly, especially after use in harsh environments such as muddy conditions, rain, or snow.

Abnormal noises often serve as early warning signs of suspension system issues. If the cause remains unclear, prioritize inspecting the bushings and fasteners.
