How to Install Leaf Spring Bushings

90*16*1140 8L Leaf Rear Spring

If you’ve already removed the old leaf spring bushings, the subsequent reinstallation step becomes particularly critical. While damaging a single bushing may allow you to minimize losses promptly, installing it incorrectly could cause years of trouble.

Is there any wear inside the hole? Any abnormal deformation? Any cracks?

If this issue persists, simply replacing the leaf spring bushing will not resolve it; an evaluation of the entire leaf spring assembly may be required to ensure that the hole walls are smooth without burrs before proceeding.

After removing the old bushing, the eye holes of the truck leaf spring are typically filled with carbon deposits and rust. If the new bushing is inserted directly, the uneven rust spots will create stress concentrations, causing deformation or even cracking of the bushing housing.

Use a wire brush to grind the inner wall of the eye hole until the metal surface is exposed. Carefully avoid enlarging the hole diameter; simply remove any remaining rubber and rust.

For many people, the first reaction is still Smartisan.

Don’t.

Once the spring eye deforms, serious problems follow.

The greatest concern in this process is deviation—even a slight one. If the rubber is pressed halfway and then corrected, it will already be damaged.

The correct procedure is: align with the center, confirm complete coaxiality, and then press inward slowly.

If you notice significant obstruction, do not rely solely on brute force; instead, stop and re-examine the situation.

At this point, apply an extremely thin layer of lubricant to the outer wall. After pressing it down firmly, install the inner metal sleeve and verify its centered position again.

If this step is done correctly, there will generally be no issues later on.

Steel shell bushing

Pads with metal casings are typically tighter-fitting. During press-fitting, ensure: the sleeve size matches properly; only the pushing side contacts the pad casing; and sufficient clearance exists on the receiving side.

In some cases, the tension may be very high; you can gently warm the surrounding area, but the temperature must be kept under control. Remember not to burn or discolor the leaf spring steel.

Blots

Only pre-tightening is required at this stage.

The vehicle must be fully grounded and its suspension restored to its natural load-bearing position before tightening the bolts with a wrench according to specifications.Otherwise, the bushing remains locked in a suspended state and will remain continuously twisted upon landing, causing the rubber to crack prematurely over time.

Several small issues that are often overlooked

The left and right bushings must be replaced together.

If the leaf spring shackle is worn, an additional inspection should be performed.

Old leaf spring components such as bolts should be replaced together.

Install slowly and patiently; don’t rely solely on brute force.

So,how to install leaf spring bushings?

Observe before cleaning,be patient when pressing in, and ensure the component is firmly secured before installation.

If you notice obvious signs of metal fatigue in the leaf spring suspension during installation—such as severe collapse of the blade curvature or asymmetrical body height—replacing the bushing will only address the symptoms, not the root cause.
