How to Install Sway Bar Links?

Does your vehicle feel more unstable when turning compared to before?

It’s very likely that there’s a problem with the sway bar connections.

Installing sway bar links yourself is straightforward—most vehicle models can be done independently with the right tools and proper procedure.

When should the sway bar links be replaced?

The obvious signs are actually quite clear:

Hearing a “click” sound while driving

The degree of roll during turning is greater than normal.

Visual inspection revealed that the bushings were cracked or loose.

If a problem is confirmed—even if only one side is damaged—it’s best to replace both sides.

Before performing the procedure, consult all available documentation to verify torque specifications, as they may vary between vehicle models.

Step 1: Lift the roof

To ensure chassis safety during operation, select a level surface and engage the handbrake.

First, slightly loosen the tire nut, then use a jack to lift the vehicle and place it on the bracket for secure positioning. Safety comes first—this step must not be skipped.

After removing the tire, you can usually see the location of the sway bar link.

 

Step 2: Remove the old sway bar link

Regardless of its appearance, it’s advisable to apply some lubricant.

First, remove the top bolt. During removal, ensure the sway bar is not under any force to prevent sudden rebound.

Next, remove the nut connecting the sway bar and control arm. If you notice the screw rod rotates when turning the nut, this indicates that the middle position must be secured with a hex key.

After removing both upper and lower fixed points, the old sway bar linkage can be detached. During removal, apply slight force to shake it slightly, as the bottom rubber component may be secured in place.

 

Step 3: Compare

Before installing the new sway bar link, briefly compare its length and joint structure; any mismatch may affect the suspension geometry.

 

Step 4: Install the new sway bar link

You can insert the bolt through either the control arm at the bottom or the sway bar at the top, depending on available space.

Once the new parts are securely mounted on both sides, tighten them uniformly.

 

Step 5: Tighten to the specified torque.

This is crucial: before using a torque wrench, always verify the standard torque values for both ends, as it directly affects service life and driving safety.

Are there any differences between the front and rear sway bar links?

The overall installation approach is similar; generally, front sway bar links offer more space and are easier to operate.

If your vehicle has covered a significant mileage, consider inspecting the sway bar bushings as well. Our engineers recommend performing a simple visual check every 500 km for peace of mind.

Simple Test

Drive at low speed over small potholes and test the vehicle’s stability when turning.

Under normal conditions, after replacing the new sway bar links, any abnormal noises will largely disappear and vehicle stability during turns will improve significantly.

If you have any further questions, it is best to have your vehicle thoroughly inspected by a qualified technician.

 

The sway bar itself controls the vehicle’s lateral tilt range, while its connecting link links it to the suspension system, directly impacting the vehicle’s stability.

If abnormal noises or increased vehicle side lean occur during driving, check the condition of the sway bar and replace it with a qualified replacement part when necessary. This will effectively restore proper handling performance and prevent potential future issues.
